The XVI Commonwealth Games, also known as Kuala Lumpur 98, took place from 10 to 20 Sep 1998. The first time in the history that the Commonwealth Games would be held in an Asian member nation, Malaysia prepared to make this Games the best ever Commonwealth Games. This stamp issue is the second in a series of stamps issued leading up to this prestigious sporting event. The first series was issued in 1994 (click here for more details). The two stamps in this second series depict the fourteen sporting events in the Games, namely Athletics, Badminton, Shooting, Squash, Weightlifting and two new events, Hockey and Cricket (first RM1.00 stamp); as well as Boxing, Cycling, Gymnastics, Lawn Bowls, Swimming and two newly introduced team games, Netball and Rugby (second RM1.00 stamp). The gutter features Wira, the official mascot of the Games, in three different game poses.
