The North East Line (NEL), colloquially known as the purple line, is the third MRT line introduced and built in Singapore. Unlike the North South Line (NSL) and the East West Line (EWL) that are above ground, the NEL is the first fully underground and automated rapid transit line. Another interesting feature is that the NEL is the first train line in Singapore to feature artworks at all 16 stations through the Art in Transit (AIT) Programme. This stamp issue in 2003 commemorates the opening of the North East Line, and the stamps in this issue feature the NEL, NSL and EWL network map (No Value Indicator), the train station (60c) and the train control station (S$2.00). Besides the three stamps in this issue, the miniature sheet also includes the three stamps from the first MRT network (the NSL) issued in 1988; now reissued at different denomination – click here to view the stamps issued in 1988.
