Excessive exploitation due to human behaviour and activities has led to the near extinction of many marine animals. Steps have to be taken to preserve the balance of the ecosystem of the ocean to prevent the further degradation of the population of these animals. To raise awareness about the conservation of these magnificent marine species and emphasizing the importance of protecting their habitats, this stamp issue by Pos Malaysia on endangered marine life consists of three regular stamps (click here for more details) and a miniature sheet. The stamp in the miniature sheet features the humpback whale, which is widely distributed in all major oceans, from the poles to the tropics. In Malaysia, a confirmed live sighting of two humpback whales was recorded off the coast of Miri, Sarawak in 2007. The humpback whale can be easily identified by its spectacular breaching, lobtailing and flipper-slapping. The average lifespan of humpback whale is between 45-50 years.
